Apple's HomeView Uses CarPlay Apps Without an App Store

Apple's HomeView hub has no App Store but runs compatible CarPlay audio and video apps via a nearby iPhone, Engadget reports.

Apple's HomeView page says the device "supports compatible third-party audio and video apps from your iPhone." After reviewing Apple Developer documentation, Engadget reported that the company is referring to CarPlay apps. When an iPhone is nearby, HomeView can access compatible apps, with processing handled on the iPhone rather than on the hub.

Only CarPlay audio and video apps are available for now, including Spotify and Deezer. Messaging apps and chatbots are excluded. Users cannot install apps separately on HomeView or download anything directly from the device.

HomeView comes with preinstalled Apple apps such as Safari, Music, Podcasts, Messages, Reminders and Calendar. Facial recognition lets it show different information depending on who is using it.

Developers that already offer CarPlay-compatible apps face little or no work to support HomeView, while audio and video streaming apps without CarPlay support must add it. iOS 27 added support for video apps on CarPlay, but major services have not enabled it so far. Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube are absent from CarPlay and will not be on HomeView either. Safari is built in, which likely allows video playback from the web, but the experience is not the same as using an app.

In the short term, HomeView gives developers new reasons to build their apps for CarPlay, which could benefit both drivers and HomeView owners. Without a real App Store, however, it is hard to know whether developers will embrace the platform. Apple's policies for distributing CarPlay apps are more restrictive than those for iOS apps, which might discourage some developers.
