Apple to Launch First Touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro This Week, 9to5Mac Reports
9to5Mac says Apple will launch its first touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro this week, topping a three-tier lineup.
The base tier will use the current MacBook Pro design with an M6 chip in a 14-inch model and lesser thermal capacity, according to 9to5Mac. The middle tier will consist of the currently sold 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which the report says will remain unchanged. The top tier will be the redesigned OLED touchscreen models, which 9to5Mac describes as significantly lighter and as the first major overhaul of the MacBook Pro since 2021. The report says these models will offer Dynamic Island, OLED touch displays and potentially cellular support.
On pricing, 9to5Mac expects the M6 14-inch model to keep the $1,999 price of the existing M5 14-inch model, with 1TB of storage and 16GB of unified memory. The report says it would not be surprising if Apple returned to 512GB at the base tier, noting that Apple recently reintroduced 256GB as the base storage tier on the Mac mini after briefly discontinuing it.
The existing high-end MacBook Pro models will move to the middle of the lineup, with no changes and likely unchanged prices, according to the report. It cites Omdia as saying the existing miniLED displays for MacBook Pro will remain in production through 2028, suggesting those models will stay in the lineup for some time.
9to5Mac's estimated pricing for the broader MacBook lineup includes a MacBook Neo at $699, MacBook Air 13-inch and 15-inch models at $1,299 and $1,499, the M6 14-inch MacBook Pro at $1,999, the current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max at $2,499 and $2,999, and the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch models at $2,999 and $3,499. The report says the redesign prices are guesses and that Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said the redesigned models will fetch a significantly higher price, possibly starting above its estimate.
The report says the older models remaining in the lineup are likely a sign of how expensive the new models will be. It describes the new MacBook Pros as the most exciting Macs in some time, while warning that buyers should be prepared to pay for them.
