Google Docs Now Edits Markdown Files Without Conversion

Google Docs now edits Markdown files without conversion, and Drive adds formatted previews, Android Authority reports.

Under the update, a user uploads a .md file to Google Drive and opens it in Docs, according to the report. A small .md badge next to the document title indicates the file's format. Users can keep working in the original file while using Google Docs collaboration tools, including comments, suggested edits and version history.

Google Drive also now displays formatted Markdown previews instead of plain text, Android Authority reported. The preview can show headings, tables and hyperlinks, and users can switch to a raw text view to see the original syntax.

Markdown is a lightweight formatting method that uses symbols, such as a hashtag before a line to create a heading and asterisks to make words bold. Android Authority reported that the format is popular among developers and AI tools, and that people who ask AI chatbots to produce project plans, instructions or research may encounter Markdown without realizing it.

Before the update, sharing these files with someone unfamiliar with Markdown could be difficult. The recipient might struggle with the formatting, or the sender could convert the file to a Google Doc, which meant working in a different file type, the report said.

Google says the feature is available to anyone with a personal Google account or a Workspace account, not only paying Workspace customers, according to Android Authority. Users can start by uploading a Markdown file to Drive.
