Google Wallet Prepares Alipay Plus QR Payments for International Travel

Google Wallet is preparing Alipay Plus QR payments for travel, starting with Singapore; no launch date is set.

The report, based on a review of Google Wallet version 26.42.1003171897, said the app contains work for a new "Overseas QR payments" option in its settings. A "Learn more" link on that screen leads to a Google Wallet support page for a feature called Traveler QR. The page says the option is designed to activate automatically when a phone detects that the user is in a covered region.

Google's support page refers to "any of the supported destinations listed above," but the only destination it explicitly names at present is "Alipay+ partner networks in Singapore," according to Android Authority. The report said the option could eventually expand to Alipay Plus in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and other markets, but that no such markets are listed in the current documentation.

Alipay is a digital wallet used widely in China, while Alipay Plus supports payment systems in countries across Southeast Asia. Google Wallet's planned option would let travelers make Alipay Plus payments by QR code when they are in a supported region, the report said. Android Authority also noted that the support page is not yet publicly linked from other Google pages, suggesting the documentation may still be under development.

Google has not announced a formal launch for Traveler QR, and the report did not provide a release date. Android Authority said it would watch for a launch announcement or further updates to the support page that clarify which markets will be included.
