iRobot’s Roomba Duo Concept Puts a Tiny Robot Vacuum in Its Hat

TechRadar reported that the concept addresses a long-standing trade-off in robot vacuums: machines need enough power and capacity to clean thoroughly, but they also need to be small enough to reach tight spaces. The Roomba Duo tries to do both by splitting the work between two robots.

In its full form, the Roomba Duo is a bulky floor cleaner with a body large enough to hold the hardware for serious cleaning. Adam Pope, chief engineer and vice president of product planning and development at iRobot, told TechRadar that the large base robot is designed for heavy-duty cleaning. “It’s big enough to be able to have lots of water inside, and it can also have stronger vacuum,” he said. “It’s designed for heavy-duty cleaning and more open spaces and high-traffic areas in your home. You get that heavy-duty clean that you might use a stick vac or a wet-dry vac on today.”

The base also carries a companion robot vacuum similar to the Roomba Plus 575. That smaller machine is meant to clean under furniture, around chair legs, in corners and other places the larger robot cannot reach. “They work together,” Pope said. “They each have their own job, and they kind of split the job up and go do those activities.”

At IFA 2026, TechRadar saw a demonstration in which the dock was lifted off the top of the cleaner base, lowered to the ground and opened so the smaller robot vacuum could exit. The small robot then completed an obstacle course that appeared too tight for it to navigate, returned to its dock, and was lifted back to its charging home on top of the base robot.

Pope said the Roomba Duo is a concept rather than a product headed to stores. “It’s a cool little innovation concept we’re just showing here at IFA to see how the market reacts to it and if there’s interest in that type of product,” he told TechRadar. Asked about standing out in a crowded robot vacuum market, he pointed to rapid model releases and specification competition. “There’s a lot of spec war in that category,” he said. “Not as much innovation as we’d like to see. So this was our way of trying to get something different, something new. But it still does the job — the job that customers actually need.”
