Apple Expected to Debut OLED iPad Mini 8 This Week With A20 Pro and $799 Starting Price
Apple is expected to unveil the OLED iPad mini 8 this week, with an A20 Pro chip, possible water resistance and a reported $799 starting price.
The OLED display is the most widely rumored change. It will not use the tandem OLED technology found in the iPad Pro, according to 9to5Mac, but it is still expected to deliver more vibrant colors, improved contrast and a brighter screen. It is unclear whether Apple will include a 120Hz ProMotion display; the report says the new iPad mini could remain at 60Hz.
The current iPad mini uses Apple’s 3nm A17 Pro chip with 8GB of memory. Rumors cited by 9to5Mac suggest the new model will use the A20 Pro with 12GB of memory, enough to run Apple’s most advanced on-device models locally and improve voice and dictation features in Siri AI. The A20 Pro is also expected to bring roughly 60% better multi-core CPU performance and 166% better GPU performance than the A17 Pro.
Apple is also working to make the iPad mini water-resistant, according to the report, through a new casing and redesigned speakers that help push out water ingress. That could make it the first water-resistant iPad.
Pricing is expected to rise. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, as cited by 9to5Mac, said the OLED iPad mini with the A20 Pro chip could start at $799, up from the current $599 starting price. It is unclear whether the $799 model will still start with 128GB of storage; the report adds that a 256GB base capacity would soften the increase.
