Apple Limits New iPhone Camera Controls to Latest Models, Extends Free Satellite Service for Older Phones

Apple has restricted its new Pro controls and third-generation Photographic Styles to the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo, while extending free satellite features for another year on iPhone 14, 15 and 16 devices.

The restrictions apply to the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. Owners of last year's iPhone 17 series or any earlier model cannot access the new camera features. The limitation emerged in the hours after newly installed Apple CEO John Ternus concluded the company's iPhone Duo event, when iPhone users on social media pointed out that the tools were tied to the current batch of devices.

The features are aimed at photography enthusiasts. Pro controls let users adjust white balance, manually tweak aperture and shutter speeds, and consult histograms, among other tools. The third-generation Photographic Styles provide presets and filters and now include precise controls for grain and texture. They remain out of reach without one of the latest iPhones.

For older iPhone owners, Apple also quietly extended its free satellite connectivity features for another year. The extension applies to devices in the iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 ranges, even though the free deal was meant to have expired for those devices. Apple originally launched satellite features for the iPhone 14 in 2022 and said that product would receive two years of coverage, but it has repeatedly extended the free terms for the iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16.

The extended coverage includes Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite, Find My via satellite and Roadside Assistance via satellite. There is no news on how much Apple might charge if it decides to end free satellite coverage. For now, older iPhone owners will not need to pay for an upgrade to keep using those satellite tools for at least another year.
