Apple's First Foldable, the iPhone Duo, Ships in October With iOS 27.1
Apple's iPhone Duo pairs a 5.4-inch cover screen with a 7.6-inch inner display whose matched proportions let iOS 27 hold one continuous layout. It ships in October with iOS 27.1, and multitasking is limited to two apps.
The cover screen offers about 90 percent of the display area of an iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner panel is roughly 50 percent larger than an iPhone 18 Pro Max. Calculated from the published resolutions, the outer screen is about 1.46:1 and the inner screen about 1.42:1, meaning the unfolded display resembles the cover screen rotated 90 degrees and enlarged.
On that geometry, iOS 27 uses a layout that sits between the traditional iPhone and iPadOS. The Dock moves from the bottom of the screen to the right side, the Dynamic Island is arranged vertically, and the status bar is compressed into a circular entry in the top right corner. Keeping controls at the side leaves a central display area whose aspect ratio is closer to that of a conventional slab phone, which lowers the adaptation burden: developers can follow standard Size Classes rules and avoid the horizontal stretching that third-party apps often show when a foldable is opened.
Apple also aims to preserve spatial continuity between the two screens. When a user unfolds the phone from the home screen, most icons and interface elements do not jump position, and the system mainly expands the available space. Full-screen apps still rearrange their content, but system controls fixed to the right side stay where they are, so the effect is one interface expanding rather than a switch from a phone layout into a tablet layout.
Placing the control bar on the right puts frequent actions such as back, Dock switching and search within reach of the right thumb, forming an operating loop with the side-mounted Touch ID. In a 50/50 split-screen multitasking mode, the left app's control bar aligns to the left edge so both apps sit close to the user's thumbs. Multitasking itself remains limited: the Duo supports two apps, or two windows of the same app, plus saved combinations. Some Android foldables already run three split-screen apps and several floating windows, a difference the report describes as Apple staying restrained.
Rather than asking developers to design fixed layouts for closed, half-open, landscape and portrait states, Apple introduced Arrangement Views, in which the system decides whether the main and secondary views should use a side-by-side split or an overlay based on the space available. iOS 27.1 refines toolbar scheduling with a new toolbarCompressionBehavior that lets developers set what compresses first when space runs short: navigation-heavy apps such as podcasts can compress the toolbar and keep the bottom tab bar, while games and creative tools can collapse the tab bar and keep core controls. A visibilityPriority setting lets developers rank buttons, so key actions such as composing mail or creating a note survive while secondary buttons move into an overflow menu.
Third-party adaptation falls into three tiers, according to the report. Apps still built on iOS 26 or earlier run in compatibility mode and cannot use the larger inner screen fully. Apps updated to the iOS 27 SDK can at least re-layout under the new size rules. Apps optimized for the Duo can move the top toolbar to the side and change the interface according to hinge state. Apps using Apple's standard navigation bars and toolbars adapt more cheaply, while social, banking and gaming apps with heavy custom interfaces must be reworked. Apple will provide a Duo simulator in iOS 27.1 and the new version of Xcode, but most developers will not have retail hardware before launch, making a mix of readiness levels likely in the first months.
Apple is not treating the Duo purely as a technology showcase. TrendForce estimates shipments of about 5 million units in 2026, close to a quarter of the global foldable market. A starting price of $2,000 keeps it a niche flagship, but those buyers are likely to be valuable to developers.
On hardware, Apple uses a nano-coated matte finish to reduce reflections, which gives a paper-like drag when writing with a Pencil at the cost of some absolute clarity; the crease remains visible when the screen is off. In software, iOS 27.1 introduces a Reserved Regions displacement mode that developers can query in real time through GeometryProxy. When the device is half-folded like a book, the system marks the bend as unavailable space and text and images move away from it; in grid layouts such as a fitness app, spacing is added on either side of the hinge so tappable tiles avoid the crease. Half-folded use is also built into the system: standing the Duo at an angle on a desk puts it into a redesigned StandBy mode, with one screen showing a clock, photos or widgets.
Scene Accessories API let the two screens take on different tasks, for example showing a teleprompter on the outer display while filming on the inner one, and CameraCaptureAccessory makes such dual-screen shooting a standard capability. Apple also exposes hinge angle through an onHingeChange API; in an official demonstration, changing the angle of a virtual guitar became a whammy-bar pitch input. Netflix, Slack and Zoom have shown Duo-specific interfaces, some of which adjust control positions in real time as the hinge moves.
The Duo arrives a year after Liquid Glass, the interface material that drew widespread criticism when it was introduced. Apple's design team said at the time that it had produced many physical glass samples to study refraction, reflection and focus. Alan Dye, then vice president of human interface design, described the release as Apple's broadest software design update and said the company believes deep hardware-software integration makes interaction intuitive, beautiful and pleasant.
Apple also published a patent in July, US 2026/0219758 A1, from its human interface design team describing interface elements that stretch and compress like jelly, with the system computing deformation from the angle and force of a finger swipe rather than playing linear animations. The report links the resulting motion to the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process with two 16-core neural engines. Looking further ahead, 2027 marks the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone, and rumors have described a commemorative model with an all-glass body, no metal frame, a hidden front camera and solid-state buttons. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that impact resistance and assembly yields pushed the production version toward a compromise, with curved glass on the front and back extending to the sides but a metal frame remaining in the middle.
Before release, a user posting as @MalayVasa built a wallpaper preview tool from the published screen dimensions and ratios using GPT-6 Astra, letting people simulate how an image appears on the cover and inner screens.
