Apple unveils eighth-generation iPad mini with OLED display starting at $699

Apple's new 8th-gen iPad mini starts at $699 with an 8.5-inch OLED screen, A20 Pro chip and IP67 rating.

Apple says the refreshed eighth-generation iPad mini is the most significant update ever for its small tablet. The device has roughly the same footprint as the 2024 release, but the display is slightly larger because Apple reduced bezel thickness by 24 percent. It is almost a full millimeter thinner than the last iPad, at 5.4 mm. The chassis is also IP67 rated for water and dust protection; the seventh-generation iPad mini had no official IP rating.

The 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR display, up from 8.3 inches, moves from the previous model's IPS technology to OLED. Ars Technica reports that the change brings deeper blacks and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits, compared with 500 nits on the previous mini. The display can also reach a minimum brightness of 1 nit, and Apple will offer a nano-textured matte display option. The A20 Pro chip first appeared in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. According to Ars Technica, the display experience on the new mini should be much more in line with Apple's Pro-level devices.
