Arctic Fox’s Super Mouse puts a 3.1-inch touchscreen under the hand
Arctic Fox’s Super Mouse puts a 3.1-inch touchscreen under the hand for shortcuts, apps and typing; preorders cost $199.
The Verge reported that the delivery estimate should be treated with caution because many Kickstarter campaigns have faced unforeseen delays. The $249 retail price makes the Super Mouse more expensive than other attempts to merge mice and touchscreens. Turtle Beach’s Command Series MC7 has a 2.25-inch narrow display on its side, while the Super Mouse places its 3.1-inch screen front and center.
The touchscreen is intended primarily as a quick way to launch apps through a Control Panel that can hold up to 16 shortcuts, macros or launchers. Its functions change contextually and present relevant shortcuts based on the app in use; when working with video in Adobe Premiere, for example, the screen shows editing and playback shortcuts. Users with specific workflow needs, or whose apps are not recognized, can customize the mouse through Arctic Fox’s Flow desktop app.
The mouse also offers event and meeting reminders when synced with Google Calendar, voice-to-text processing handled locally on the device, multiple user profiles, focus timers and productivity tracking. A built-in gyroscope allows users to control slideshows or scrub video by moving the mouse. The Super Mouse does not appear to offer wireless operation: instead of a rechargeable battery, it draws power from a USB-C port and must remain tethered to a PC.
Arctic Fox positions the Super Mouse as a possible replacement for a trackpad, macro pad or streaming controller. The Verge reported that users who type faster on a phone could potentially use its smartphone-sized touchscreen, including swipe typing, in place of a full-size keyboard. The mouse’s boxy design may not prioritize ergonomics, the report said.
