Changan's Zhao Fei: Cars to Become Largest Carrier of Edge-Side Physical AI
Changan's Zhao Fei says cars will become the largest carrier of edge-side physical AI and outlines an AI strategy.
Zhao offered two judgments on the global development of intelligent connected vehicles. In edge-side physical AI, he said, automobiles will be the carrier closest to deployment, with the fastest penetration growth and the largest application scale. He pointed to the Changan Qiyuan Q06, whose city navigation version accounted for nearly 50% of orders in its first month on the market. Zhao expects the industry to achieve L3 mass production in 2027 and L4 commercial operation in 2028.
His second judgment was that automobiles are extending into a land-sea-air mobility ecosystem, opening new incremental space for the industry.
Around industry changes, Zhao presented Changan's "one body, three domains" AI transformation strategy. The company is carrying out an AI product action to build differentiated competitiveness in AI-defined cars. Changan has established the Tianshu Intelligent Experiment Center, which it describes as the only national key laboratory for intelligent vehicle safety technology in China and internationally leading. It holds China's first dedicated official license plate for L3 autonomous driving and a Chongqing test license for L4 robotaxis, according to the report.
Changan's self-developed one-stage end-to-end driver assistance system, Changan Tianshu Navigation, began mass production and installation in vehicles this year. The system takes safety as its core and connects six domains — cabin, driving, power, chassis, control and cloud — the report said. It has achieved integrated in-house development of software and hardware in core areas to provide smooth and reliable driving and riding experiences.
In AI manufacturing, Changan has built a smart manufacturing matrix of "one global cloud application plus N local factory applications" and is moving toward modern manufacturing. In AI operations, it is pushing its organization from "human-machine collaboration" toward "carbon-silicon symbiosis," with AI-assisted decision-making and autonomous execution loops already in place in several areas, according to the report.
Zhao stressed that safety is the fundamental precondition and an inviolable bottom line for intelligent connected vehicles. Changan has built a multi-dimensional safety system and has participated in the formulation of more than 360 international, national and industry standards, he said. He called on global industry peers to establish a consensus on industrial development with safety as the bottom line, strictly implement laws, regulations and regulatory requirements, and reject false publicity and "pseudo-innovation."
At the conference, China Changan Automobile also opened an experience zone for production vehicles equipped with Tianshu Navigation. Through real-road test drives of the Qiyuan Q06, it demonstrated the technology of Changan Tianshu Navigation, which it describes as the first one-stage end-to-end intelligent driving assistance system self-developed by a central state-owned enterprise. International guests, industry experts and media attended the test drives, according to the report.
