Engadget Guide Outlines Windows 11 Settings Changes to Stretch Laptop Battery Life
Engadget published a guide on September 12, 2026 detailing Windows 11 settings that can extend laptop battery life, covering screen brightness, power modes, Energy Saver, visual effects and background apps, and noting that power management always involves trade-offs.
The guide frames power management as a series of trade-offs, noting that the more a laptop does, the faster it drains, so users give up some performance in exchange for runtime. It states that most clamshell machines still rely on the x86 architecture rather than the more efficient ARM systems, and that Windows 11 has itself struggled with performance overhead. On that basis, Engadget says the single best battery-life tip for a Windows laptop is to switch to Linux, before listing steps for users who stay on Windows 11. Not everyone needs every change, the guide adds, and users should mix and match until they reach a workable balance.
The first recommendation is to lower screen brightness, adjusted by pressing Win + A and dragging the slider down. For power settings, the guide points to the Settings app, opened with Win + I, then System and Power & battery. There, the Power Mode menu controls how long the screen and system stay awake on battery or on AC power, followed by screen, sleep and hibernation timeouts, which the guide says are important to lower for machines often left idle. Energy Saver, described as similar to the low power mode on a phone, limits background activity, reduces screen brightness and disables some Windows effects, and can be set to switch on automatically at a chosen battery threshold.
For users willing to dig further, the guide suggests the older Control Panel, reached by searching from the Start menu. Inside Power Options, selecting Power saver and then Change plan settings followed by Change advanced power settings opens a broader menu. There, the Minimum and Maximum processor state entries under Processor power management allow a user to underclock the CPU deliberately to save battery.
A further step is to reduce visual effects. Under Settings, Accessibility and Visual Effects, the guide recommends toggling off Transparency effects and Animation effects. To go further, typing performance into the Start menu leads to Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, where Adjust for best performance turns off more visual elements. The guide says this has the largest impact on budget Windows laptops.
If settings alone do not deliver the needed runtime, the guide points to programs running in the background. It advises checking the taskbar first, closing apps shown by larger icons and then the smaller icons in the bottom-right corner, including those tucked behind the small upward-facing arrow. Browser tabs are also flagged as a drain: closing unused pages in Chrome or Edge helps, and tabs needed later can be moved into tab groups and closed, or saved to a bookmarks folder. The guide also recommends enabling Memory Saver in Chrome, Sleeping Tabs in Edge or an equivalent feature, which reduces resources allotted to tabs left unused for a while.
Finally, the guide suggests opening Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and clicking Processes on the left side. Sorting by name gives a full view of what is running, while clicking a resource heading such as CPU shows which programs consume the most. The guide describes this step as more advanced and urges care before making changes to running processes.
