Google Adds Direct Password and Passkey Transfer Between Android Password Managers
Google introduced a new Android switching experience that moves passwords and passkeys between password manager apps without exporting a CSV file. 1Password, Bitwarden and Dashlane are supported at launch, with more apps to follow.
Under the new system, a user opens the password manager they are moving to and chooses to import or copy passwords from the older app. Android detects the password manager apps installed on the device and coordinates the transfer between them. The user can review the information being moved and approve it with a few taps, according to TechCrunch.
The transfer also covers passkeys, so users do not have to set them up again after changing apps. Google said the app-to-app process avoids the risk of exposing credentials through a CSV file. Android Authority reported that the previous approach generally required exporting an entire vault as a file, saving it to the device and then importing it into the new app. That exported file could be unencrypted, leaving usernames and passwords in a regular file on the phone until the user remembered to delete it.
1Password, Bitwarden and Dashlane are supported at launch alongside Google Password Manager, and Google said more apps will be added in the future.
