Google Health Removes Fitbit Account Login, Says Unmigrated Data Will Be Deleted

The change was disclosed in sparse update notes accompanying Google Health version 5.08. The release fixes several bugs, but the main change is that accounts can now only be accessed through a Google account. Google's notes stated that data left in legacy Fitbit accounts rather than migrated to Google accounts "will be deleted." The notes did not elaborate further on the deletion.

Google has been telling users to expect the shift since 2022, according to Android Authority. At that time it said that eventually, accessing Fitbit — the service has since been renamed Google Health — would require a Google account rather than the Fitbit credentials users had previously relied on.

The company gave users an extended period to move their data, and early this year it pushed the deadline back again. That extended deadline passed in May. The removal of Fitbit credential login followed, leaving the Google account as the only way into the app.

Google acquired Fitbit in 2021. The migration requirement and the renaming of Fitbit to Google Health are part of the company's consolidation of the fitness tracking service under its own account system. Users who completed the move to a Google account keep access under the new login; those who did not are affected by the deletion notice.
