Google Releases Gemini App for Windows 10 and 11, Summoned by Alt+Space

Google has shipped a Windows version of its Gemini app for Windows 10 and 11, callable anywhere with Alt+Space. TechRadar, which tested it, calls it the fastest way yet to reach Gemini on a PC, though it flags missing voice mode and a persistent location display.

The app follows an earlier macOS release and gives Windows users a dedicated client rather than requiring a browser tab. On the configuration TechRadar tested, installing the app took over the Alt+Space combination, which already serves as the shortcut for the active window's system menu and as the default trigger for Microsoft's PowerToys Run quick launcher.

TechRadar reported that the shortcut made Gemini available almost instantly and kept it from interrupting work in other applications. The app mirrors the capabilities of the web version, including image creation with Nano Banana and video generation with Gemini Omni.

Google has also connected the app to other services in its ecosystem, including Gmail and Drive. Users in eligible countries such as the United States who subscribe to Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra can hand multi-step tasks to Gemini Spark, which Google describes as a personal AI agent.

Two shortcomings stood out during testing, according to TechRadar. The app permanently displays the user's location at the bottom of the left-hand sidebar, which the publication said creates a privacy risk for people working from home, since the address could appear in desktop screenshots. TechRadar said it found no obvious way to remove the location display, only to close the sidebar entirely.

The second complaint concerns the absence of a Gemini Live experience, the voice mode available on the iOS and Android versions that lets users speak to the assistant conversationally and, on phones, point a camera at the surroundings and ask questions about what it sees. TechRadar said a comparable desktop mode that could interpret what is on a PC screen would be useful, but that for now users must take screenshots, upload them through the app and ask questions about the images.

Google said more native desktop capabilities will be added over time. The Gemini app is available globally for Windows 10 and 11 and can be downloaded now, according to TechRadar.
