iFixit Teardown Shows iPhone Duo Repair Gains and Hinge Dust Risk

iFixit finds iPhone Duo easier to repair but at risk from hinge dust; its factory film must not be peeled.

The inner display's nano-texture layer is a factory film that can be replaced separately, but iFixit and the report warned users not to peel it. The display beneath is weaker and has no oleophobic coating, and aftermarket inner-screen films sold on Taobao and JD do not adhere to the nano-texture layer and can add thickness that presses on the panel, according to the report.

The phone uses two steel-case batteries totaling about 19Wh, close to the 21Wh battery in the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Steel cases improve space utilization by 10% to 18% because they need no aluminum-plastic film edge or expansion space, the report said. The batteries are held with electrically debondable adhesive; applying DC power removes adhesion without heat or prying, a method iFixit praised.

iFixit said the outer screen's adhesive balances holding strength and removal difficulty. Its chief teardown engineer, Shahram Mokhtari, said an easily removable outer screen matters because it is often repaired and is the starting point for teardowns. A separate WekiHome teardown found a custom 1.91mm front-camera assembly, 3.29mm with the lens group, using a Sony IMX915 sensor mounted with gold wires in a hollowed substrate while retaining 4K 60 Dolby Vision. The X-axis linear motor is about 681.5 cubic millimeters, between the iPhone Air and iPhone 18 Pro, according to WekiHome.

The hinge uses four sets of springs for torque, two fewer than Samsung's Z Fold8, but iFixit found uniform feel and resistance stages, and the phone supports more hover scenarios than the Z Fold8. That suggests a different camshaft design and undercuts claims that the iPhone Duo is a rebadged Z Fold8.

In iFixit's dust test, the iPhone Duo showed ingress similar to the Z Fold8: powder entered through gaps between the hinge cover and body, causing stiff hinge movement and noise. The IP68 rating requires no visible dust inside after eight hours in a talc dust chamber; the two bodies were not penetrated, but the hinge risk remains. Apple did not install the semicircular dust caps used on other foldables, and iFixit's test showed powder accumulating at the gap.

iFixit also offered a possible explanation for recent screen failures. The damaged areas correspond to where the hinge's center pivot connecting plate, display cable and steel battery edge meet. The plate must sink slightly during folding to leave room for the display; if the movement is wrong or delayed and dust enters the hinge, the bent screen may press on that point and be damaged, iFixit speculated.

The report recommended AppleCare+ for buyers using the iPhone Duo as a daily driver and said those still waiting may benefit from lower prices and better third-party app adaptation later.
