iOS 27 Adds Custom Find My Location-Sharing Periods and a Way to Pause Them

Apple's Find My app in iOS 27 will let iPhone users set location sharing for a custom period, from 15 minutes to 30 days, and pause indefinite sharing without notifying the other person.

The expanded options build on a feature iOS already offered. In iOS 26 and earlier, users could share their location through Find My with another person for one hour, for a day, or indefinitely. The new version presents choices labeled For One Hour, For Today, Always and Custom. Selecting Custom opens rolling dials that set the period by days, from one to 30, by hours, from 1 to 23, or by minutes, from 1 to 59. Users who would rather not calculate the interval themselves can instead pick a specific end date and time. The shortest period available is 15 minutes, and combinations can be precise, such as an hour and a half or one day, three hours and five minutes.

The point is to match sharing to a particular situation. Someone traveling with friends who have planned an afternoon apart can keep the group updated without having to remember to switch the setting off after the trip, while a person heading to a blind date can let a roommate follow their location for the evening. Once the chosen time runs out, the other person can no longer see where the user is. While sharing is active, they can tap the user's name in the People list in Find My to see the location.

iOS 27 adds a second option for people who share indefinitely, such as a spouse or a child. A Hide Location control pauses sharing temporarily. The other person is not notified of the pause and simply finds that the location cannot be found if they check. Engadget describes pausing this way as more convenient than removing the sharing settings and having to add them again later, and lists stopping at a bakery or flower shop for a gift, visiting a friend who does not know about an arrival, and surprise parties as cases where the control could be used.

The features can be tried before the official release by installing the iOS 27 public beta, which Engadget notes is also where the temporary hide option is already available. Beta software can be unstable while bugs are worked out, and the report advises backing up an iPhone before installing it. iOS 27 also brings changes to Apple Intelligence, Siri, child safety, accessibility and Maps, with the location-sharing adjustments among the smaller updates to Find My.
