iPhone Duo vs. Galaxy Z Fold8: How Apple’s First Foldable Compares on Paper

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 is the third foldable in the Galaxy lineup, and its dimensions closely matched rumors at the time for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, including a 10:16 outer display and a 4:3 aspect ratio when unfolded. On paper, the two devices are close in size. Both have 7.6-inch inner displays: the iPhone Duo uses a 7.6-inch OLED panel, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 uses a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel. The iPhone Duo’s inner screen has a 2670 × 1878 resolution at 430 ppi, compared with 2448 × 1848 on the Samsung. Both support up to 120Hz refresh, though Apple describes its system as ProMotion and Samsung as 1–120Hz adaptive.

The cover screens differ slightly. The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch OLED outer display with 2034 × 1398 resolution at 460 ppi, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 5.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X outer display with 1972 × 1248 resolution. Both offer up to 120Hz refresh, and both are rated for up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

Dimensions and weight show a more noticeable split. Unfolded, the iPhone Duo measures 164.6 × 117.8 × 5.2 mm, compared with 161.4 × 123.9 × 4.5 mm for the Galaxy Z Fold8. Folded, the iPhone Duo measures 84.1 × 117.8 × 11.3 mm, while the Samsung measures 81.9 × 123.9 × 9.7 mm. The iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201 grams.

Internally, the iPhone Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip. The Galaxy Z Fold8 uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. Apple has not disclosed the iPhone Duo’s RAM, though 9to5Mac says it is likely 12GB. Samsung’s device has 12GB with 256GB or 512GB storage and 16GB with 1TB storage. The iPhone Duo will be offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations.

Camera hardware also differs. The iPhone Duo has a 48MP Main camera and a 48MP Ultra Wide camera with 2x optical-quality zoom. The Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 50MP Wide camera and a 50MP Ultra Wide camera, also with 2x optical-quality zoom. The iPhone Duo uses an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen and a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer/front. The Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 10MP inner camera and a 10MP outer/front camera.

Battery and endurance details are partly incomplete. Apple says the iPhone Duo has a dual-battery design but has not disclosed capacity. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has a dual-battery design with 4,800mAh. Apple rates the iPhone Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner screen and up to 44 hours on the outer screen. Samsung rates the Galaxy Z Fold8 for up to 26 hours. The iPhone Duo has IP68 water and dust resistance, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 has IP48. The iPhone Duo supports Apple Pencil (USB-C); the Galaxy Z Fold8 does not list stylus support.

Pricing starts at $1,999 for the iPhone Duo in the United States and $1,899.99 for the Galaxy Z Fold8. 9to5Mac noted that hardware is only part of the story. System-level features such as the iPhone Duo’s screen transition animation and other software optimizations for the foldable form factor could make a significant difference. Those areas will likely be a main point of comparison once in-depth reviews arrive.
