Long-time Pixel users cite clean Android and Google features, but Gemini and hardware draw complaints

Pixel loyalists praise clean Android and Google features, but Gemini, camera processing and hardware draw complaints.

The thread asked long-term users why they had not switched brands. Responses spanned multiple Pixel generations and mixed praise for Google’s software with frustration over newer directions.

Clean, relatively uncluttered software was among the most frequently cited reasons. Several commenters compared Google’s interface with Samsung’s One UI and said they preferred Pixel because Samsung’s software includes duplicate apps, bloatware and unnecessary customization. "As bloat-free as it gets for Android," one user wrote. Another said bloatware would keep them from moving to Samsung.

Long-term reliability also mattered. One owner called the Pixel 2 XL the best phone they had used for reliability and longevity, saying it "lasted me years." Another said a Pixel 7 still did not feel dated enough to justify an upgrade.

Google’s software features made switching difficult for some. Users praised Call Screen, Scam Detection, voice typing and Gboard. "Pixel’s Call Screen is also just on another level that no phone has matched yet," one commenter said, adding that such features had kept them from switching to an iPhone.

The camera remained a major selling point, especially for point-and-shoot photography, but it also produced some of the thread’s sharpest complaints. One user wrote, "Came for the camera, stayed for the camera, now considering leaving for the camera…" Others cited perceived stagnation, AI-driven image processing and video recording that did not match the competition.

Several commenters criticized Google’s AI push, saying Gemini is being forced into everyday workflows at the expense of features that already worked well. "People want better hardware, not more Gemini slop," one user complained. Others reported problems with voice commands in Android Auto and frustration with familiar Assistant-era functions.

Hardware remained a point of contention. Some Pixel owners said Tensor performance was adequate for everyday tasks, while others cited overheating, battery life and pricing as reasons to consider alternatives. "The lack of on par hardware to compete as a flagship has been disappointing year after year since they decide to go with their own Tensor chip," one user said.

The responses suggested that Pixel loyalty stems less from raw specifications than from the overall experience, according to Android Authority. The report said that as Google’s software evolves, the company may have to work harder to ensure its AI ambitions do not undermine the simplicity that brought many users to Pixel.
