Microsoft Adds Built-In Internet Speed Test to Windows 11

Microsoft has added a built-in internet speed test to Windows 11, now available to Windows Insider testers.

The feature is currently limited to Windows Insider testers, and ZDNet reported it requires the Experimental channel. Because Experimental builds can be unstable, the report advises against installing them on a primary PC and suggests a spare computer, a dual-boot setup or a virtual machine. Even after joining the Experimental channel, ZDNet had to enable a feature flag before the tool appeared: in Settings, open Windows Update, select Windows Insider Program, choose Feature Flags, find Quick Settings Speed Test and set it to Enabled, then restart.

After restarting, users can open the tool in two ways, according to ZDNet: left-click the system tray and choose Speed test from Quick Settings, or right-click the Network icon and select "Test internet speed" from the pop-up menu. Clicking Test starts the check. A graph shows download and upload speeds as the test runs, and the results display both numbers.

The new option differs from the speed test already present in current Windows 11 releases. In those versions, ZDNet reported, right-clicking the Network icon and choosing "Perform speed test" opens a Bing search page where the test must be run and results viewed. The new tool runs inside Windows, which ZDNet described as an improvement over the existing one.

Microsoft said in a blog post that because the test runs against the active internet connection, users can quickly understand how the current connection is performing without leaving their workflow. The company said the updated experience builds on the internet speed test it previously introduced for Windows Insiders, bringing the test and its results directly into Windows, according to ZDNet.

Microsoft did not disclose the source behind the test, ZDNet reported. The Info icon for the tool says "Powered by SpeedTest," an indication that the data comes from internet speed tester Ookla. ZDNet said it ran the built-in test and Ookla's website test several times and found download and upload performance similar between the two.

The new speed test is only in the Insider Experimental channel, so an official rollout to all Windows 11 users may take time. ZDNet reported that the tool is convenient, runs smoothly and appears accurate.
