Microsoft Edge Review Pipeline Strains as AI Coding Drives Extension Submissions
Microsoft says AI coding has sharply increased Edge extension submissions, straining reviews and prompting new check changes.
The team said developers can build and tweak extensions far more quickly, which it largely views as positive for the Edge ecosystem. Edge has long struggled against competitors such as Chrome. Microsoft also worries about the additional pressure its own developers now face.
Although the team introduced an "expedited review process" in 2025, its "review pipeline has experienced additional strain" and review times are suboptimal, according to the report. TechRadar reported that even Microsoft's own software teams are struggling with the avalanche of AI-generated code.
To address the stress, Microsoft said it streamlined how extension submissions move through the review pipeline to reduce waiting time for developers. The changes do not reduce the number of checks or lower standards, the company said. One change adds automated systems to identify known policy violations and security issues.
"Our objective is to make Edge the easiest place to build, publish, and grow an extension," Microsoft wrote, according to TechRadar. The company also knows Edge falls short of Chrome in outright user adoption.
Statcounter figures cited in the report show Chrome accounts for 71% of all desktop browsing sessions, with Edge in a distant second place at 11% market share.
Microsoft is also changing its Featured badge, which assesses extensions across "more than 60 quality signals." The increasingly automated system will now re-check extensions every 15 days. "With this more frequent cadence, high-quality extensions can earn recognition sooner, and developers receive faster feedback on their investments in quality," the company added.
