Nintendo Switch 2 Adds Docked VRR Support After Earlier Reversal
Nintendo adds docked VRR to Switch 2, matching a TV's refresh rate to a game's frame rate through a dock update.
"VRR output is now support in TV mode," Nintendo wrote. "When both the software and the TV support it, the video will be output at a refresh rate that matches the game's processing speed. An update to the Nintendo Switch 2 Dock is required to enable this feature."
VRR reduces judder, tearing and other screen problems by matching a television's refresh rate to a game's frame rate. The technology is already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC. Engadget reported that Nintendo had initially said the Switch 2 would support VRR in both handheld and docked TV modes when it unveiled the console last year. The company did deliver VRR on the handheld OLED display, but it later removed information about docked VRR support and confirmed that the feature would be handheld-only.
In July, Nintendo posted a job listing seeking a "senior display engineer" with "knowledge of display technologies such as HDR and VRR." Engadget reported that the listing suggested the company was still working on the feature.
The VRR support arrived in a new Switch 2 firmware update. That update also includes a new handheld boost toggle, an update to the Mii editor and the ability to transfer an entire system to another Switch 2 console. A day earlier, during its Direct event, Nintendo unveiled Metroid Ravenous and a Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. The company also said it will release a 40th-anniversary Legend of Zelda-themed Switch 2 console next month.
