Nintendo Switch 2 Adds Docked VRR With System Update 23.0.0, but Only One Game Supports It So Far
Switch 2 update 23.0.0 adds docked VRR, but the feature currently works with only one game and appears to run on a whitelist.
VRR matches a display's refresh rate to the frame rate a game is producing, which removes screen tearing and judder on televisions and monitors that support the standard. On the Switch 2, the feature was previously limited to handheld play; the new update extends it to TV mode. Nintendo's release notes state that "VRR output is now supported in TV mode. When both the software and the TV support it, the video will be output at a refresh rate that matches the game's processing speed." The update has to be applied to both the console and the Dock.
Support is handled on a title-by-title basis rather than at system level. Digital Foundry reports that "the feature appears to operate on a whitelist, so only games that developers have flagged as supporting docked VRR will activate it." It is not yet known whether Nintendo will require a lengthy certification process before a game is added, or whether studios can simply ship an update that switches the feature on. TechRadar notes the PlayStation 5 can force VRR at the system level on games that do not natively support it, a different approach from Nintendo's.
At present, the only title listed as compatible is Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, which received an update adding the feature. TechRadar had expected Nintendo to have patches ready across its own catalog at launch.
Nintendo had previously described docked VRR support on its US website before removing the wording last year, so the hardware was already understood to be capable of it.
System update 23.0.0 also allows a complete data transfer from one Switch 2 to another, adds a shortcut toggle for Switch 2 Boost that avoids a trip into System Settings, improves accessibility options, and introduces background music in the Mii editor that can be turned off. The update includes interface adjustments and unspecified bug fixes and optimizations, and Nintendo has published a support page for it.
Editor's Summary
Nintendo's Switch 2 update 23.0.0 enables variable refresh rate output in TV mode, roughly a year after the feature was first advertised and then withdrawn from Nintendo's site. Compatibility is currently restricted to a single title and appears to depend on developers flagging their games, leaving the size of the supported library unresolved.
