Rebellion Calls Alien Deathstorm Dynamically Generated, Not a Corridor Shooter
Rebellion calls Alien Deathstorm a dynamically generated survival horror with sandbox elements, not a corridor shooter.
Alien Deathstorm was revealed earlier this year by the developers behind the Sniper Elite series and Atomfall. Rebellion describes it as a 'visceral first-person action horror experience, where second-to-second survival hinges on responding to a monstrous, constantly shifting threat on a storm-blasted off-world colony.' TechRadar Gaming went hands-on with the game at Gamescom and later interviewed Rebellion developers about the concept and design influences, replayability, and player freedom.
While the game may look like a standard survival shooter with typical survival horror features, the team considers it a dynamic experience with sandbox elements, where the player's actions can affect unscripted enemy encounters. Producer Martin Willingham told TechRadar Gaming that this means the horror and the tension can happen at any time in different ways between playthroughs and between difficulty camps.
Willingham said that for him, that is one of the most exciting parts of the game because in horror games the experience is typically 'very, very choreographed' to build anticipation and jump scares, but that also means 'you can only play it once.' He said the team values replayability and sandbox freedom, which meant 'we had to do something dynamic.' Building encounters around the player and the player's activities means it is a different experience, he added.
Head of design Ben Fisher called the game 'dynamically generated.' He said levels are played sequentially and each has its own sandbox, adding, 'It's a rare beast.' Willingham later added, 'It's not another corridor shooter. You're in that sandbox. It's 360 degrees. The action could be coming from anywhere, rather than just at the end of that corridor.'
Editor's Summary Rebellion Developments is presenting Alien Deathstorm as a dynamically generated survival horror game with 360-degree sandbox elements, rather than a linear corridor shooter. The studio says encounters can vary between playthroughs and difficulty settings, with player actions affecting unscripted enemy encounters. The game is slated for Spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, with no specific release date yet.
