Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Is Closest U.S. Android Match to Apple’s iPhone Duo, Engadget Finds
Engadget compared Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, with Samsung, Google and Motorola book-style foldables and found the Galaxy Z Fold 8 the closest U.S. match by display size and rear cameras, though the Android phones differ on durability, battery and price.
Engadget compared the Duo with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Motorola Razr Fold, all book-style devices that open into mini-tablet-sized screens. The Duo has a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display and weighs 9 ounces. The Z Fold 8 matches the inner display at 7.6 inches and has a 5.5-inch cover screen, while weighing 7.09 ounces. Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold has an 8-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch outer screen and weighs 8.4 ounces. Motorola’s Razr Fold has a 6.6-inch cover display, an inner display of nearly 8.1 inches and a weight of 8.6 ounces.
The Duo carries a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera and two 48-megapixel rear cameras. Samsung’s Z Fold 8 has two 50-megapixel rear cameras and a 10-megapixel front camera. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s 48-megapixel main camera is similar to Apple’s, but Google adds a 10.8-megapixel telephoto lens that the Duo lacks. Motorola’s Razr Fold has 50-megapixel main, ultrawide and telephoto cameras and a 20-megapixel cover selfie camera.
On durability, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is the only Android model in the comparison to match the Duo’s IP68 dust and water resistance rating. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is rated IP48, and the Razr Fold is rated IP48/IP49. Apple has not disclosed the Duo’s precise battery capacity, saying only that it can last up to 24 hours of mixed use on a charge. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold has a 4,806mAh battery, the Z Fold 8 has a 4,800mAh battery and the Razr Fold has a 6,000mAh battery, which Motorola calls “the largest available in a foldable.”
The Duo starts at $1,999.99 for 256GB. The Galaxy Z Fold 8, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Razr Fold all start at $1,899.99; the Samsung and Google models are listed at 256GB, while the Motorola model is listed at 512GB. Google and Samsung offer 1TB options, but neither offers the 2TB configuration available on the Duo.
Engadget also noted that Xiaomi unveiled its 18 Fold days before the Duo, describing it as the brand’s first “mid-size” foldable. Its display measures 7.68 inches when unfolded and its outer display measures 5.38 inches, measurements close to those of the Z Fold 8 and iPhone Duo. The Xiaomi 18 Fold is not distributed in the United States.
