TechRadar: VPN Can Unblock SABC+ for Viewers Outside South Africa

TechRadar outlines how a VPN can bypass SABC+ geoblocks abroad and details its free content and supported devices.

SABC+ carries SABC 1, SABC 2, SABC 3, SABC News and SABC Sport, along with radio stations and on-demand past episodes of popular SABC dramas and soapies. TechRadar said the local content is free but that SABC TV and SABC+ are geo-restricted outside South Africa under licensing agreements, so viewers traveling or living abroad cannot tune in without a South African IP address. It said a VPN can overcome the restriction and allow access as normal from the US, Canada, UK, Australia or elsewhere, and named NordVPN as its preferred service.

For viewers in South Africa, TechRadar said users can download the SABC+ app or visit its website, click “Sign Up,” enter an email address or mobile number, verify the account and begin streaming for free. It said an AMP upgrade offers additional local and international movies, series and reality shows from R7 per day, R17 per weekend or R19 per week.

TechRadar listed SABC+ content including on-demand libraries for SABC 1, SABC 2 and SABC 3, with titles such as Breaking New Ground, The Estate, Soul City, Isidingo and Zone 14. It said reality fans can find Go Viral, Tropika Island of Treasure, The Longest Date and Deal or No Deal, while other categories include award shows, Chinese dramas, documentaries including BBC Africa Eye and podcasts such as 5FM Podcasts: Pap & Politics with Thabo Balle. Live news, educational programming and sports are also available, including South Africa test matches, rugby and live football on SABC Sport.

The report said SABC+ is supported on Apple TV, Android smartphones and tablets, Android TV and Google TV, computers running PC or Mac operating systems, Google Chromecast, Huawei smartphones and tablets, iOS devices such as iPhone and iPad, LG Smart TVs and other compatible smart TVs.

TechRadar added that it tests and reviews VPN services for legal recreational uses, such as accessing a service from another country subject to that service’s terms and conditions, and for protecting online security and privacy while abroad. It said it does not support or condone illegal or malicious use of VPN services and does not endorse consuming pirated content that is paid for.
