watchOS 27 Release Notes Detail Siri AI, Health Updates and Smart Stack Changes
Apple's watchOS 27 will arrive next week with a more conversational Siri, new Apple Intelligence features, health notifications and Smart Stack gestures, according to the company's release notes.
According to the release notes, Siri is getting a more capable and conversational version that draws on personal context understanding, app actions, onscreen awareness and broad world knowledge to help users find information and complete tasks. A new voice experience offers more expressive and natural-sounding voices, and users can customize expressivity and pace using on-device models on a paired iPhone Air or iPhone 17 Pro models and later. A dedicated Siri app lets users revisit an existing conversation or start a new one and privately syncs conversations across Apple products with iCloud.
Apple Intelligence features are also expanding across apps. Workout Buddy provides motivation with new insights and is now available without an iPhone nearby when the watch has a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Call Context in the Phone app understands when a user is speaking to certain businesses and proactively surfaces relevant information from across apps, such as a confirmation code or reservation number.
Cycle Tracking adds cycle deviation notifications that are suggestive of perimenopause for users age 40 and over. A new Siri Modular watch face includes a rectangular complication that mirrors the top widget of the Smart Stack, which dynamically updates to show the most relevant widget, along with a Siri complication to invoke Siri quickly.
The Smart Stack gains a single-handed tap gesture that lets users tap their index finger and thumb together once to select a widget, even when the other hand is occupied. Apple says new suggestion widgets will appear when most relevant to the user, including a Parked Car location, birthday reminders for a close contact, balance changes on a transit card, the Noise app after a loud noise notification and more.
The update also includes system improvements. A dynamic app grid highlights the most popular and recently used apps. The Find My app is consolidated into one app that shows People, Devices and Items with a map-centric interface. Media playback starts faster. The Workout app makes distance calculations during treadmill workouts more accurate from the first step of every walk or run, and the Fitness app features more accurate route maps after workouts. Battery extension notifications may be proactively offered to disable certain features to increase battery life, including gestures, Start Workout reminders and the Raise to Speak method of invoking Siri. Shazam in the Smart Stack and the Music Recognition app can identify songs offline without an internet connection and deliver results automatically when the user is back online. Liquid Glass refinements improve readability with more uniform refraction and improved contrast.
Apple says information on the security content of its software updates is available at support.apple.com/100100. The company notes that usage limits may apply for some Apple Intelligence features, and that software updates like this one add new features and improvements that may affect performance and battery life.
