7 horror movies to stream in September 2026 on Netflix, HBO Max, Shudder and more

TechRadar picks seven horror films hitting major streamers in September 2026, including 'Carrie', 'Sinister', and 'Backrooms'.

Starting with the Stephen King adaptation "Carrie" (1976), available on HBO Max in the US on September 1. The Brian De Palma classic stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, and arrives ahead of Mike Flanagan's upcoming "Carrie" series.

"Sinister" (2012) lands on Hulu in the US on September 1, featuring Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer who finds snuff films. The film is known for its effective jump scares, including one widely praised as among the best in modern horror.

"Ready or Not" (2019) streams on Netflix and Hulu in the US from September 1, with Samara Weaving as a bride who must fight for survival against her wealthy in-laws' deadly game. The sequel, "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come," recently debuted on Disney+.

Shudder's original "Parasomnia" arrives September 4 (US only). It follows Riley, a young woman haunted by night terrors and visions of a dungeon maze and a malevolent entity called 'The Seer'.

"Heretic" (2024) becomes available on Hulu in the US on September 8, starring Hugh Grant as a manipulative man who traps two Mormon missionaries in his home and tests their faith. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East co-star.

Later in the month, Shudder launches "Bloody Tennis" on September 25 worldwide. Set at a prestigious tennis academy, it follows newcomer Sophie as she confronts extreme violence and must rely on survival instincts.

Finally, "Backrooms" makes its US streaming debut on HBO Max on September 25. Based on the Creepypasta and Kane Parson's YouTube series, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a furniture salesman who enters a terrifying infinite labyrinth, with Renate Reinsve as his therapist who searches for him. TechRadar's review praised it as a five-star film.
