A Week With Pixel's AI Battery Summaries Finds Useful Basics but Missed Potential
Android Authority spent a week testing Google's AI battery summaries on a Pixel 11 Pro XL. The tool names the apps draining your battery in plain English, but the reviewer says it needs deeper data and predictions to change how people actually use their phones.
The reviewer tested the tool on a Pixel 11 Pro XL, tracking battery use for seven days. No setup is required: the summary appears at the top of the Battery usage screen, reached through Settings and then Battery and charging, and takes about a second to generate while Gemini analyzes recent activity. According to the publication, the summaries correctly identified TikTok and X as the heaviest drains on the device, and the plain-language descriptions were more informative than the bare percentages they replaced.
Knowing which apps consume the most power, however, is unlikely to change habits. Android Authority noted that some of those apps are ones people need or enjoy, and users will keep living with their inefficiency regardless of what a summary says.
The review did find value in one part of the feature: it tells users whether their consumption is normal or heavier than usual for that point in the day. That matters when a long day lies ahead and there is no chance to top off the battery, since it signals whether to cut back on scrolling.
The more interesting question, the reviewer wrote, is what the tool could become. Android already warns about background and dormant apps drawing too much power, but the review called for a broader breakdown of other background functions, a home-screen widget, and a fuller picture of device health. Rather than simply flagging heavier-than-normal use, the summary could explain why consumption is up: whether the user scrolled far more than usual, or simply spent hours driving with Google Maps running, which is a drain the user cannot avoid.
Android Authority also wants cellular connectivity strength reported over the course of a day. A weak signal that forces the modem to work harder could be a real factor in battery use, the review said, adding that poor modem performance troubled earlier Pixel generations and that recent models have not repeated the problem, though the reviewer would still like to see what role the modem plays.
Predictive advice was another suggested improvement. If heavy social media use is the main cause of poor battery performance, the review said, the tool should say so in concrete terms, such as telling a user they can scroll TikTok for only 30 more minutes if they want the phone to last the day.
The reviewer said they are more open to Google's AI features than in previous years, pointing to the Pixel 11 Pro XL as the strongest example so far and to signs that Gemini Intelligence could deliver tools used daily. The same review noted, however, that earlier ideas such as Daily Hub and Daily Brief did not play out as planned. Battery summaries are a decent start, Android Authority concluded, but at present they are not worth much of a user's time.
