Adobe Lightroom Mobile Adds One-Tap AI Open Eyes Feature

Adobe says Lightroom mobile can now open closed eyes in photos with a one-tap generative AI tool.

When the app detects that a person, or a group of people, has closed eyes in a photo, it automatically presents a new Open Eyes Quick Action as an icon over the image, Adobe said. The icon gives users direct access to the feature.

The tool is designed to save an otherwise strong photo by replacing closed eyes. Adobe said Open Eyes relies on generative AI so the replacement eyes match the lighting and pose of the original image. The app also uses other images of the same person in the user’s Lightroom library as reference, so the open eyes match that person’s eye color, size and shape, according to the company.

Photoshop Elements has included a comparable feature for nearly a decade, but it sources replacement eyes from another photo of the subject, DPReview reported. Results vary depending on differences between the two images. Lightroom’s Open Eyes uses generative AI and the user’s photo library instead.

Adobe’s other apps, including Photoshop, can perform similar fixes with generative AI tools, but the process is not a one-tap fix and is not free, according to DPReview.

Users of the free version of Lightroom mobile can try Open Eyes twice before they are prompted to subscribe to an Adobe Creative Cloud plan that includes more credits for its AI-powered tools, DPReview reported.
