Adobe rolls out AI-heavy Photoshop update with optional 'AI Assisted Editor' mode

Adobe's Photoshop update adds an optional AI Assisted Editor interface, a markup tool, and Firefly Image 5-powered mask editing.

The AI Assisted Editor, accessible from a toggle on Photoshop's menu bar and hidable in Settings, provides a prompt-based workspace with tools including Prompt to Edit, Remove Background, Generative Expand, Remove Tool, Generative Fill, Generative Upscale and AI Markup, according to Adobe. The Verge reported that the new view shows all of Photoshop's AI features in a single toolbar.

A new Markup feature lets users draw directly on an image to show the AI assistant what they want changed. Adobe says users can "select areas to recolor, sketch arrows to indicate position, or brush in rough shapes to suggest new elements" without using a text prompt. 9to5Mac reported that Markup works with natural-language instructions, such as adding clouds or changing a shoe.

The update also improves "Instruct Edit with Masks," powered by the Firefly Image 5 model. Adobe said the model now understands the entire context of an image, so users no longer need to manually mark every edit area. They can describe changes like opening closed eyes or placing a hat on someone's head, and the unmasked areas remain untouched.

In addition, a "Prompt to Edit" tool allows users to transform an entire image with a single prompt, such as turning a day shot into a night shot, according to 9to5Mac. The publication said the tool supports FLUX 2 pro, FLUX Context Pro, Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro, Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana, GPT Image 2, and Adobe's own model, creating a new layer with two variations.

Adobe also introduced a non-destructive Light Adjustment Layer with controls for exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites and blacks, which Engadget described as bringing Lightroom-style controls to Photoshop. Additionally, Dynamic Text now extends to custom shapes and paths, and a dockable Stock Panel puts more than 900 million Adobe Stock assets inside Photoshop, according to 9to5Mac.

AI Assisted Editor is available in beta starting today, while the other tools are generally available in the latest Photoshop update on Creative Cloud.
