AI-Assisted TV-Debloating Projects Gain Popularity Among Smart-TV Owners
AI-assisted open-source tools let TV owners strip ads, block tracking and swap launchers without rooting their sets.
Cleanyourtv, which was known as tv-vibehack until the 19th, tv-detox and dumbtv make similar claims: they remove sponsored ads, debloat the TV so it runs faster and block unwanted data collection that tracks what users are watching, without hacking or rooting the set. By default, all three also replace the television's built-in app launcher with simpler ones. Some users are going further and vibe-coding their own replacement launchers, including a Pokemon-themed example shown in the report.
Most of the projects seen so far target TVs running Android and Google TV operating systems, including sets from TCL, Hisense and Sony and older Amazon Fire products, according to the report. They use existing developer modes and the Android Debug Bridge, or ADB, to tweak settings and apply and remove packages, the GitHub pages state. Those pages say the projects can also work with some Fire TV products that use a custom fork of Android, though likely not with the new Vega-based Fire TV Sticks.
Because the projects rely on built-in developer tools, they do not require root access or firmware hacking and are reversible, according to the report. Even projects that completely change the interface use Android's ability to install custom launchers; in many cases, users get help from Claude Code or a similar tool to create the new launcher.
