AI Coding Tools Are More Addictive Than Helpful for 80% of Developers, Survey Finds

A survey finds 80% of developers say AI coding tools feel more like dependence than advantage, with many working late and risking burnout.

The survey showed that 43% of developers continue coding with AI after hours even when they meant to stop, and 32% have delayed sleep to keep going. Thirty-nine percent said AI tools have made it harder to switch off from work. Although 74% said heavy AI use made them more likely to earn a raise or promotion, 51% also said they were more likely to burn out.

Quentin Rousseau, CTO and co-founder of incident-reporting firm Rootly, described the addictive pull in a LinkedIn post cited by ZDNet. "It's 2:47 a.m... I'm just watching Claude Code refactor a module… and I can't stop," he wrote, explaining that successful agent actions trigger a dopamine hit and failures cause an adrenaline rush. Rousseau said he sought medical help after losing sleep over watching an AI agent work.

Trust in AI coding output is also slipping, according to other data in the ZDNet report. The 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey found that 45% of programmers are frustrated by AI answers that are "almost right, but not quite," which complicates debugging work. While AI adoption has climbed to 80% among developers, trust in AI accuracy has fallen from 40% to 29%, and positive favorability dropped from 72% to 60% year over year.

Developers still must understand requirements, review generated code for security and fit, test edge cases, and own production consequences. This creates what some call "verification debt," where output arrives fast but confirming its correctness takes time. Employers who treat AI as a way to multiply developer capacity can further push workers to ship more features in the same hours, shifting the burden to larger pull requests and more operational risk, and potentially accelerating burnout.
