AI use among UK teachers doubles but workload relief remains limited, survey finds

A YouGov survey shows 80% of UK teachers now use AI at work, yet only 35% work fewer hours, with saved time redirected to other tasks.

According to the survey, only 35% of teachers said they were working fewer hours as a result of using AI, while 55% said they worked the same amount of time. The findings indicate that AI is saving time on specific tasks, but teachers are then spending that saved time on other work, implying that they have long been overstretched.

Teachers reported using AI most commonly to produce lesson plans and worksheets (76%) and to draft letters, emails to parents, or pupil reports (39%). Only 8% use AI to mark students' work, showing a focus on administrative tasks rather than replacing skilled teaching duties.

The survey also highlighted concerns about student use of AI. More than half of teachers (57%) suspected at least one student of submitting AI-assisted work without permission in the past month.

These figures paint a complex picture of AI's role in education, where the technology may both improve and challenge current practices. The UK government is still determining how best to position AI to have a positive impact, according to the report.
