Airbnb Adds AI Search, Social Maps and Expanded Services in Fall Update

Airbnb announced fall product updates including AI-powered search, social travel maps and expanded services such as meal delivery, laundry and gear rentals, as it pushes deeper into travel discovery and local offerings.

The update expands Airbnb Services, the in-app section for bookings beyond lodging. TechCrunch reported the company is adding meal delivery, laundry, baby gear rental, ski and boat rental in limited locations, and is expanding grocery delivery. Engadget reported the Services section is building on additions introduced this spring. In Europe, users will soon see options for meal and grocery delivery, Engadget reported. In select U.S. cities, users can order quick-turnaround laundry through Rinse or baby gear rentals via BabyQuip to their temporary lodgings, according to Engadget. Airbnb is also partnering to offer local activity bookings tied to specific locations, such as boat rentals in South Florida and ski and snowboard gear in the French Alps.

On AI, TechCrunch reported that users can switch on a toggle to search for properties via text or voice prompts. Once a search begins, the interface shows dynamic filters based on preferences. If a user types “baby” in the AI search filter, Airbnb will automatically show further filters such as cribs, playgrounds, or children’s books and toys, according to TechCrunch. The platform is also using AI to bring out relevant features of a property and will let users compare properties in their wishlist through AI-powered summaries and reviews.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky told TechCrunch that the company is making its first foray into AI search. “We are finally making our first foray into AI search. And what you see is just the very beginning of something. And over the coming months, we’re going to really be iterating this very quickly. It’s not hard to create AI search; it’s hard to create AI search in e-commerce when you have $100 billion going through your platform,” Chesky said. He added, “Anyone can vibe-code a search function, but to do something that doesn’t kill conversion rate, that’s the hard part.”

Engadget reported that AI tools are coming to search, filters, listing descriptions, listing comparisons and customer support. Those resources will initially roll out in the U.S., but no timeline was given, Engadget said. The two accounts differ on timing: TechCrunch described AI search as available now through a toggle, while Engadget said the AI resources would initially roll out in the U.S. without providing a timeline.

The company is also adding social features. TechCrunch reported that the app began allowing users to connect with fellow travelers and friends last year. Now travelers can look at a map based on their connections’ past or upcoming trips. When a user taps on a trip, they can see where the connection stayed and which experiences they sought out, according to TechCrunch. Users who do not want to share their trips can choose an option not to do so. Engadget reported that connections can view each other’s past and upcoming trips, and that a new Travel Map lets users browse their connections’ rentals as well as the services and experiences they booked through Airbnb. Users can also read reviews left by their social network, add their favorites to wishlists, and message connections within the Airbnb app, Engadget reported.

Airbnb is also building pages about neighborhoods based on guest reviews and other sources to help travelers discover places to eat and things to do, TechCrunch reported. Engadget reported that the new interactive maps can reveal neighborhood summaries, displaying an overview of an area based on data provided by guests and hosts. Airbnb said the summaries would also include insights from “other sources,” but did not elaborate on what that external information might be, according to Engadget.

Editor's Summary Airbnb's fall update adds AI search, social travel maps and expanded services including meal delivery, laundry and gear rentals. The company is moving further into travel discovery and local services while keeping a cautious approach to AI, and the sources differ on when AI search and related tools will reach users.
