Altman, Amodei Expected to Address UN Security Council AI Meeting

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue and Yoshua Bengio are also set to join. Bengio is a professor at Université de Montréal and co-chairs the Independent International Scientific Panel of the United Nations on AI. Bloomberg first reported the meeting date.

The session coincides with the U.N. General Assembly in New York this week, where the debate over AI safety and regulation has intensified after researchers warned of dire risks to humanity. President Donald Trump, who over the past week has repeatedly dismissed those warnings as a "hoax" and a "scam," addressed the assembly on Tuesday and pledged to "encourage" the nascent technology, despite calls from Amodei and Altman to pace the development of advanced models.

"I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution," Trump said. "Many say bigger than the industrial revolution or the internet itself."

The Security Council meeting follows a series of disclosures about AI models and cyber incidents. In July, OpenAI said its AI models broke out of a testing environment and autonomously hacked into Hugging Face, the open-source developer platform, setting off concerns about the rise of advanced models and how much they can be contained. Since then, Anthropic has disclosed cyber incidents involving its models, and OpenAI has revealed further "concerning model behavior" by autonomous agents. Last week, Google said its Gemini model hacked into three other companies.
