Amazon launches redesigned Kindle lineup with new colors, aluminum options and page-turn accessories

Amazon launched new Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft models with thinner designs, new colors and a $34.99 remote. The entry-level Kindle is available now; Paperwhite and Colorsoft are on preorder.

The 6-inch entry-level Kindle is 6.8 millimeters thick and weighs 140 grams, making it the most pocket-sized Kindle Amazon has made, the company said. It has 16GB of storage, lasts up to six weeks on a charge and comes in Ube, a purple named after a Philippine yam, and Graphite, for $149.99 with lockscreen ads. An aluminum version costs $189.99, doubles storage to 32GB, drops ads and comes in Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green; Engadget reported it is 20 grams heavier than the plastic model. The Verge and Engadget said the entry-level Kindle is 30 percent faster at opening books; TechCrunch reported the new display is 30 percent faster at page turns.

The redesign removes the raised bezel around the display, a change TechCrunch described as Amazon's most significant Kindle physical redesign in years. At a press briefing, Kevin Keith, Amazon's vice president of devices, said the company is using capacitive touch and haptics to create a "dead zone." "When you're gripping the Kindle, wherever you put your thumb, it will self-detect a dead zone in the Cap touch," Keith said, according to TechCrunch. The Verge reported that the power buttons on the new models have moved from the bottom to the right edge near the top, and that all three models have user-replaceable batteries to comply with European Union regulations. The new colors wrap around the entire body, and Amazon says a black layer between panel edges prevents the case color from visually bleeding onto the screen, The Verge reported.

The new Kindle Paperwhite is thinner and lighter than before and can last up to 12 weeks on a charge. It has a 16GB model for $199.99 in Graphite, a waterproof design and adjustable warm light. Amazon says it has the largest screen and highest contrast ratio among Paperwhites. A Signature Edition costs $249.99, adds an aluminum back, 32GB of storage, auto-adjusting light and double-tap page turning, and comes in Graphite and Seaglass Green.

Amazon introduced the Kindle Colorsoft in 2024 as its first Kindle with a color display. The new standard Colorsoft starts at $289.99 for a 16GB model in Graphite. The Colorsoft Signature Edition costs $319.99 with 32GB, aluminum housing, auto-adjusting front light, dock charging and double-tap page turning, and is available in Graphite and Fig. The Verge reported that display specs for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft have not changed, while Engadget and TechCrunch said Amazon redesigned the Colorsoft display for edge-to-edge color and improved clarity.

Amazon also announced three accessories. The Kindle Click is a $34.99 Bluetooth remote with a wrist strap, side buttons for brightness and USB-C charging. The Verge reported it works with Kindles released in 2024 or later, while Engadget said it works with all currently shipping Kindles and the new models. The Page-Turn-Cover costs $79.99 and attaches magnetically to the Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition, adding physical page-turn buttons. A $59.99 charging dock uses pogo pins to charge those Signature Edition models upright. Engadget noted that Kobo sells a $29.99 remote and BOOX offers the $29.99 Tappy.

Amazon is also selling Kids versions of the new devices with child-friendly covers and an Amazon Kids+ subscription, starting at $180. The Kids Kindle is available now, while the Kids Kindle Colorsoft is on preorder in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan, TechCrunch reported. Engadget's Cherlynn Low, who previewed the devices in New York, said the Signature Edition models felt cool, thin and light and that page turns were responsive; she found the Ube model's paint texture scratchier than expected, though Amazon said the soft-touch paint is similar to the previous generation's.

In a separate Amazon deal, Android Authority reported that the Belkin 16-in-1 Triple Display USB-C Dock is discounted to $199.99 from $249.99, a 20 percent drop and the best price seen this year. The dock supports up to three external displays through DisplayLink, with three HDMI 2.0 ports and triple 4K at 60Hz on compatible setups, plus USB-A and USB-C ports, two DisplayPort outputs, 2.5Gb Ethernet, separate 3.5mm audio jacks and up to 100W of laptop charging. It has a 4.4-star rating.
