Amazon Prime Day PC Component Deals Are Mostly Pricier Than Last Year, TechRadar Says

TechRadar reports that Amazon Prime Day PC component deals in the US and UK are mostly higher than last year's sale prices, as the memory crisis inflates RAM, SSD and GPU costs. A few relative bargains remain.

The Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB SSD is currently half price at $335 on Amazon US, down from $680, according to TechRadar. A year ago, the same drive was $165 in the Prime Day sale, meaning buyers are paying twice as much this year. TechRadar noted that this is now a decent price in the overall SSD landscape, which shows how much the RAM crisis has affected the market.

RAM pricing is particularly painful. A 64GB Crucial RAM kit with two 32GB modules is on sale with 7% off on Amazon UK, but it costs £690 after the discount; a year ago, the same kit was £170. A more common 32GB Crucial kit with two 16GB modules is now offered at 22% off on Amazon UK, bringing it to £400, compared with £108 a year ago. TechRadar said this amounts to an effective quadrupling of prices in both examples.

GPUs are not exempt. The Asus Prime RX 9070 XT Gaming graphics card has a 23% discount on Amazon US, reducing it to $829. In the Prime Day sale a year ago, it was $690, and it fell to $649 during the holiday season on Amazon, TechRadar reported. That means the card is now close to 30% pricier than that holiday price even when it is on sale.

Despite the bleak picture, TechRadar identified a few component deals worth considering. In the US, a Sandisk 1TB PCIe Gen 4.0 SSD is 15% off, offering sequential reads of up to 7,250MB/s and writes of 6,900MB/s. TechRadar said the drive was actually a hundred dollars dearer a few months ago than this sale price. For system memory, there are no good RAM deals, but a Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR4 RAM kit is 16% off in the US, which TechRadar described as about as good as it gets right now while still being hugely inflated compared with a year ago.

Also in the US, the RX 9070 GRE has a 33% discount, pushing it under the MSRP. TechRadar said the GRE is not a particularly well-liked version of the RX 9070, but at this price it stacks up well with its sibling Radeon GPUs and represents about as good a mid-range graphics card bargain as shoppers will get. In the UK, Amazon is offering a relatively modest 6% discount on an RTX 5080, but TechRadar said it is a couple of hundred pounds cheaper than the card can be found elsewhere and is the most compelling component bargain it could see on Prime Day.
