Amazon's About You page: How to find and edit the personalization dossier
Amazon's About You page, introduced in May, shows the details Amazon uses to personalize shopping. Engadget explains how to find, edit, remove or add information, and what those changes do not do.
The renewed interest has come partly from the specificity of the notes, according to Engadget. One Threads user posted a screenshot showing that Amazon said she "has flat buttocks." In a Reddit thread, one person said the page described them as having "mismatched trash bins," while another Redditor cited the observations "has a mother," "owns a tiny funnel" and "receives boxes from Amazon."
Amazon's personalization behind the page has existed for much longer, but the About You dossier was introduced in May, Engadget reported. Whether users find the details amusing or unsettling, the report said it is worth checking what information Amazon believes it knows.
To find the page in the mobile app, users open the Me tab, represented by the person icon at the bottom, tap their name and select About You. On the web, they go to Account & Lists, then Account, and choose About You under "Ordering and shopping preferences." Through Alexa for Shopping, users can ask "What do you know about me?" and Alexa should provide a list of several preferences and a link to the full About You page.
Users can select any individual observation in the dossier to open a pop-up that allows them to remove or update the detail. A text box lets them provide feedback or additional information. If a detail looks wrong or makes them uncomfortable, Engadget reported, that is where they can change Amazon's observations.
Users can also add details by clicking the + Create button at the top left of the page. Amazon advises, "You can tell us anything about you — your style, hobbies, interests, or who you shop for, like family or pets," according to Engadget. The page also offers an option to import information from other AI assistants, using a copy-and-paste process rather than directly connecting the services.
Editing or removing a detail does not opt users out of personalized shopping, Engadget reported. It only tells Amazon not to use that particular detail for personalization, and it should not be assumed to delete the purchase, review, search query or conversation that led to the observation.
Editor's Summary
Amazon's About You page, introduced in May, shows and lets users edit the personalization details Amazon holds, and it has drawn fresh attention for oddly specific observations. Engadget's report explains how to locate the page on mobile, web and Alexa for Shopping, and how to remove, update or add details. The changes do not disable personalized shopping or delete the underlying purchase, review, search or conversation data.
