AMD Rumored to Be Working on DLSS 5 Rival for RDNA 5 GPUs

Leaker says AMD may build a DLSS 5 rival for RDNA 5 GPUs, potentially arriving a year or more after Nvidia's version.

The claim came from Kepler L2, a leaker in the GPU field, who posted on the Anandtech forum during a discussion about RDNA 5 speculation. According to TechRadar, Kepler wrote that AMD will have its own version of 'Neural Lighting' like DLSS5 next-gen. He later clarified that he did not mean a version of Ray Reconstruction but a take on DLSS 5, or neural rendering, and that RDNA 5 GPUs would be required because 'this stuff is pretty heavy,' meaning resource-intensive.

In a further post, Kepler said there are 'a lot of issues' with Nvidia's approach to DLSS 5, but that it is possible to have a version with minimal hallucinations and an 'AI slop' look. He suggested AMD could give its AI direct access to 3D game data such as geometry, ray data, depth buffers and materials so it does not have to guess and can accurately know how each object in a scene should interact with light. He outlined a proposed alternative with a separate model for lighting improvements and another different model solely for shading complex surfaces. According to TechRadar, DLSS 5 bundles those functions into its neural rendering system and adds color grading to adopt colors the AI judges as more natural; Kepler advised AMD to dispense with color grading entirely.

TechRadar's report says AMD has long lagged Nvidia in graphics technology, with FSR following DLSS; FSR 1.0 arrived when Nvidia's DLSS 2.0 was already in play. The report suggests AMD can wait to see how DLSS 5 is received as more games use it and then build neural rendering technology to address perceived weaknesses. A clear target would be performance: DLSS 5 currently carries a substantial performance hit, and reducing it would be a big win for AMD. But Nvidia is expected to work quickly to improve DLSS 5, and the technology may be considerably better by the time AMD has its own version.

RDNA 5 GPUs are not expected for at least a year and possibly longer, with the RAM crisis not helping, according to the report. By the time an AMD rival arrives, DLSS 5.5 could be available with considerable improvements. The report also notes that perception of DLSS 5 has already turned around since its official launch, compared with Nvidia's sneak preview earlier this year.

TechRadar says the rumor comes from a single leaker and should be treated with caution, though it adds that it would be surprised if AMD were not working on such technology.
