AMD to Bring FSR 4.1 Upscaling to Xbox Series X/S and Ally Handhelds
AMD brings FSR 4.1 to Xbox Series X/S and Ally handhelds, with gains expected on lower-power models; timing is unclear.
FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR, renders a game at a lower resolution to save resources and uses machine learning to produce a sharper image. The Series X and Ally X are already powerful, so the clearest benefit is expected on the Series S, Ally S and original Ally, which should get a performance boost when FSR is active.
“We’ve worked very closely with AMD to optimize this technology, giving developers another powerful tool for great performance and visual quality for players,” Xbox CTO Scott Van Vilet said.
AMD did not give a timeline. Engadget reported that a video suggests FSR 4.1 will reach the Xbox Ally X before the end of the year, while the other devices are listed as “coming soon” without an exact release window. Engadget said it had contacted Microsoft for a timeline and would update its report when it heard back.
AMD also said FSR 4.1 is coming to older RX 6000-series graphics cards and laptops powered by Ryzen AI 9 processors. The company has already made the technology available to 7000-series cards.
Sony has its own upscaling technology, Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Engadget reported that it now supports some titles on the standard PS5 and works similarly to the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution software already available on the PS5 Pro.
