Analogue Announces Upgraded Super Nt and Mega Sg Retro Consoles
Analogue announced updated Super Nt and Mega Sg retro consoles with wireless controller support, USB-C and USB-A ports, and a redesigned case. Preorders open October 19; reports differ on the exact time and price, with shipping expected in December.
Like the Super Nt released in 2018 and the Mega Sg released in 2019, the new consoles use an FPGA processor to recreate the functionality of Nintendo and Sega's 16-bit hardware rather than emulating games in software, according to The Verge. They play original SNES and Genesis cartridges, and Engadget reported each system supports more than 2,200 games and is region-free. Video output maxes out at 1080p; neither console supports 4K, unlike Analogue's 3D for Nintendo 64 titles, The Verge noted.
The main hardware change is built-in wireless controller support. Engadget reported both consoles include Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless, a dedicated pairing button, and the ability to power the systems on and off from the primary controller. Wired controllers are still supported, but no gamepads are included; Engadget said 8BitDo's retro-style M30 and SN30 controllers, styled for Sega and Nintendo respectively, cost $30 each. The Verge described the wireless connection as built-in for controllers and accessories without requiring a dongle.
Both consoles add a USB-C port for power and an extra USB-A port for peripherals, according to The Verge. Engadget reported the USB-A port can be used to connect CRTs or charge controllers, and that the systems include an SD card slot, a new OS, a redesigned case, and the ability to swap cartridges without shutting down the system. The Mega Sg+ retains a Sega CD connector and comes with a Master System adapter, according to Engadget. The Verge described the design as a reworked industrial design.
Preorder details conflict between the two reports. The Verge said preorders start October 19 at 9 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. ET for $219.99, with shipping expected sometime in December. Engadget said preorders begin Monday, October 19, at 8 a.m. PT, with each console priced at $220 and shipping expected to start in December. Engadget said orders will be placed through Analogue's website, and that controller costs are extra if buyers do not already own compatible gamepads.
