Anbernic Reveals RG DDS Dual-Screen Handheld Built Around 3DS Aspect Ratios
Anbernic has announced the RG DDS, a clamshell dual-screen handheld pairing a 5:3 main display with a 4:3 secondary screen, running Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip.
The name stands for "Dream Dual-Screen," a reference to the 3DS hardware it is built to emulate. The main screen measures 4.7 inches and runs at 1,200 x 720, giving it a 5:3 aspect ratio. It is paired with a 4-inch secondary display at 960 x 720, or 4:3. Those are the same proportions Nintendo used across the two screens of its dual-screen portables, which is why Anbernic expects many buyers to replay 3DS titles on the device.
Powering the RG DDS is Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip. According to Engadget, that chip should be able to handle emulation of titles up to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 2 software. Anbernic has not disclosed the rest of the handheld's internals beyond a 6,000mAh battery.
The control layout is close to Nintendo's handheld, with one addition: an extra analog stick on the right side. Anbernic also fitted the device with an extendable capacitive stylus that tucks away when not in use, and it said there is a dedicated AI button, though it has not explained which features that button triggers.
The reveal comes about a year after Anbernic teased the RG DS, its remake of the Nintendo DS, making the RG DDS a step up from that earlier model. Anbernic has not announced pricing or a release date. Engadget expects the device to cost more than its $99 predecessor but possibly less than the recently released Retroid Pocket Duo, whose Lite model starts at $149, given Anbernic's track record on price.
