Android 17 beta code hints at Google Account unlock for forgotten phone PINs

A factory reset remains the standard fallback when a user cannot get past the lock screen, and it wipes the device's data. Android Authority said it found the feature while examining the beta release, which Google shipped last week, and that the code indicates the option is in development rather than available to users now.

The publication said the mechanism would restore a capability Google offered in earlier versions of Android. Until Android 4.4, users who forgot a pattern lock could reset it using their Google account credentials. Google later removed that path, so anyone locked out of a device has since had to factory reset it, according to Android Authority.

The code suggests the new version would be optional. Android Authority reported that the opt-in nature appears intended to serve both ordinary consumers, who may simply forget a code, and security-conscious users, who might not want an account credential to serve as a second route into a locked handset.

Google has not announced the feature or confirmed that it will ship. Android Authority's account is based on code contained in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 build, and beta code does not always reach a stable release. No timeline for a public rollout was reported, and the specific settings or account requirements that would govern the feature were not detailed.
