Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 hands-on: Quick Settings layout, Dynamic Color, and App Lock debut

Android Authority tests Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, finding new Quick Settings layouts, Dynamic Color tweaks, and a useful App Lock feature on Pixel phones.

The standout feature in the new beta is the ability to rearrange the Quick Settings layout. Previously, the panel's structure—brightness slider at the top, toggles below, and media player at the bottom—was fixed. In Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, users can tap the edit icon while viewing Quick Settings, then select the new "Layout" button to enter an "Edit tiles" page. From there, they can reposition the brightness slider, shortcut toggles, and media player in any order they prefer, offering a level of customization that was previously unavailable.

Google also improved Dynamic Color theming. While the stable Android 17 offers preset color options based on the wallpaper, the beta adds a pencil icon above the currently selected color, letting users choose from four variations: Neutral, Soft, Bright, and Bold. Additionally, a new paint palette icon allows users to drag a slider to create a custom color. These two additions give Pixel users much finer control over system accent colors.

The new App Lock feature has also proven surprisingly handy. By pressing and holding an app icon on the home screen or in the app drawer, users can tap "App lock" and then "Add app lock." Once locked, notification content is hidden, widgets and shortcuts related to the app are removed, and the app can only be opened using fingerprint, face unlock, or PIN. This provides an extra layer of security for sensitive apps and helps silence unwanted notifications.

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 is available now through the Android Beta for Pixel website. Users with a Pixel 6a or newer can enroll their device and download the OTA update. The stable version of Android 17 QPR2 is expected to roll out in December, likely with even more features.
