Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 brings status bar customization, Voice Broadcast toggle to Pixel phones

Android Authority writer, who tested the build, described the release as smaller than QPR2 Beta 3 but still containing useful additions. The most notable improvement is a cleaner status bar. For years, stock Android on Pixel devices offered far less status bar customization than Samsung's One UI or OnePlus' OxygenOS. Beta 4 adds a new "Status Bar" option under Notification settings, letting users decide which icons appear at the top of the screen. The controls fall into two sections: notification icons and system icons. Users can choose to show all notifications, priority notifications, or none at all, and can toggle system indicators such as mute status, vibration mode, and battery percentage. While the options are not as granular as on some other Android skins, the writer called the change a step in the right direction.

Voice Broadcast, which uses Bluetooth LE and Auracast to share a user's voice to nearby devices, was introduced in an earlier beta but becomes easier to access in Beta 4. A new Quick Settings toggle starts a broadcast with a single tap, and users can opt for a private broadcast protected by a password. However, the writer said he could not get the feature working properly in his tests: connecting via Auracast-enabled headphones produced garbled audio, which he attributed to software immaturity or hardware incompatibility. He noted the feature could be useful for accessibility, tour guiding, or classroom instruction.

The update also adds an AI Agent dashboard in the Settings app. It is intended to serve as a central place to view AI tools and machine learning models running on the phone, and to set permissions for each agent, potentially preventing access to sensitive notifications from banking or private messaging apps. The writer observed that the dashboard is currently empty, but expects it to become more important as on-device agentic tools grow more common.
