Android app Action Notch turns camera hole into a virtual shortcut button

According to Android Authority, the free app Action Notch can transform the camera notch into a gesture-controlled button for screenshots, scrolling, and automation. The report's author says it is an indispensable tool.

Action Notch supports multiple gestures, including single touch, double touch, long touch, and swipes. It offers more than 50 actions, from toggling the flashlight to running automated tasks built in Tasker or MacroDroid. The pro version unlocks additional gestures and rule-based actions, which let the same gesture behave differently in different scenarios, such as taking a screenshot in one app and toggling the flashlight in another.

The report's author said he has used Action Notch for years. In his current setup, the three gestures he uses are all available in the free version: a single touch scrolls to the top of the page, a double touch scrolls to the bottom, and a long touch takes a screenshot. This helps him navigate long chat threads and forums and saves him from pressing the power and volume buttons together every time he needs a screenshot. He said he relies on the Essentials app on Pixel phones, while Action Notch is essential for the other Android phones he tests.

Setting up Action Notch is straightforward. A user downloads the app from the Play Store, grants the requested permissions, and assigns an action to each gesture. The app runs in the background and triggers the assigned action as soon as it detects a tap or swipe on the camera cutout. Users can also customize the detection area or restrict gestures to specific apps.

Among other actions the author found useful are In-App Shortcuts, which provides quick access to Drive scanning, song search in the Google app, and WhatsApp chat, and Run Automation, which lets him execute MacroDroid automations that have no automatic trigger. Action Notch is free to download, with an optional pro upgrade for advanced features.
