Android Authority Criticizes Potential Android Auto Weather Raccoon as Distracting

Android Authority says a potential Android Auto weather feature with an animated raccoon would distract drivers and fails to address the platform’s weather shortcomings.

According to Android Authority, its Authority Insights team uncovered the possible feature in early September. The report said the feature might involve a tiny animated raccoon parading across the dashboard, with current conditions shown on it and a small caption above it displaying the temperature. Android Authority described the concept as surreal, comparing it to an April Fool’s joke arriving months early.

The article’s main objection was driver distraction. It said most Android Auto interface elements are large, consistent, legible and colorful so drivers can glance at them while keeping their primary focus on the road. A moving raccoon, especially if overlaid on smaller music information tiles, would force drivers to look at the screen to read weather data, the article said.

Android Authority said the concern is sharper because Android Auto is designed around safety. It noted the system does not officially allow YouTube video playback and restricts destination searching to voice input while driving. The article said those design choices make a quirky animated weather raccoon even more baffling.

The report also described Android Auto’s existing weather experience as one of its biggest weaknesses. It said users with access to a weather tile often see the information disappear in favor of now-playing data, or the tile fails to populate temperature data. For drivers without the tile, the article said, the weather icon is little more than a shortcut to an Assistant or Gemini prompt.

Android Authority said Google has addressed the issue to some degree. In 2024, it said, Android Auto added support for third-party weather apps, and multiple apps now work on the platform, including MyRadar and Weather & Radar. But the article said those apps do not integrate with the larger navigation experience, leaving drivers to choose between navigation details and weather information. The report said that compromise is undesirable when driving into unpredictable and rapidly developing heavy weather.

The article cited U.S. Department of Transportation figures that more than 260,000 people are injured each year in weather-related crashes in the United States, with an average of 3,800 deaths. Knowing whether a road surface will be damp, flooded or slippery is essential to informed driving decisions, the article said. It argued that Google is technologically capable of meeting a mandate for more accurate, real-time weather information.

Android Authority proposed an optional weather overlay for Google Maps as the best solution, saying it would give drivers navigation and weather information together while drawing on live radar. The article said the issue does not require a rocket scientist to remedy and called for practical thinking from Google.

Editor's Summary Android Authority reported that a potential Android Auto weather feature involving an animated raccoon would distract drivers and would not resolve the platform's weather shortcomings. The article cited U.S. crash data and argued for an optional weather overlay in Google Maps that combines live radar with navigation. It said Google is capable of providing better real-time weather information but has so far left drivers to choose between navigation and weather apps.
