Apple CEO John Ternus officially unveiled the iPhone Duo at the company's September 9 launch event. The device is not yet on sale, and the article said it will not reach store shelves for another month. Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8 a couple of months earlier with a similar wider, passport-style form factor, according to Android Authority. The article described the iPhone Duo as an impressive first attempt for Apple, while arguing that Samsung's head start still shows in the details.

The first difference cited was size and weight. According to the article, the iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams and measures around 11.3 millimeters thick when folded. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams and measures 9.7 millimeters folded, making it more than 50 grams lighter and noticeably thinner. The author, who said he has used foldable phones for half a decade, wrote that cutting even a millimeter of thickness or a few grams of weight makes a large difference in daily handling and that the iPhone Duo already seemed too thick and heavy based on specs alone.

Price was another factor. The iPhone Duo was announced at $1,999, a figure the author said was lower than his expectation of around $2,200 but still above the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Samsung's foldable starts at $1,899 in the United States, $100 less than Apple's device. The article said the gap matters more in the author's region, where the difference between the two phones is closer to $1,000. In the United States, the $100 saving could still cover a good pair of earbuds, several cases, or other accessories, according to the article.

Multitasking also favored Samsung. Apple has finally brought split-screen multitasking to the iPhone, allowing two apps to run side by side for the first time. The Galaxy Z Fold 8, by comparison, can run up to three apps at once on its inner display and also supports floating windows, which the author found especially useful on a foldable. The article added that Samsung DeX lets the Fold connect to an external monitor and work almost like a computer, with full-screen apps and a desktop-like interface, something the iPhone Duo does not offer.

The article also pointed to the physical SIM slot. The iPhone Duo supports eSIM only, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 includes a physical SIM card slot. The author acknowledged that eSIM has improved, becoming easier to activate and transfer between devices, and that more carriers support it. Even so, he said pulling a physical SIM from one phone and putting it into another remains more convenient for him, particularly because he tests many phones and travels often.

The largest factor, according to the article, was the operating system. The author said Android remains a much more open system than iOS, even as Google tightens some sideloading restrictions. He cited small frustrations on the iPhone, such as the requirement that third-party browsers use Apple's WebKit engine in most regions. For those reasons, the article concluded that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 would still be the author's choice if he were spending his own money on a foldable phone.
