Android Authority Ties Pixel 11 Gaming Stutter to ANGLE Default
Android Authority links Pixel 11 gaming stutter to ANGLE, now the default OpenGL ES layer on the Tensor G6 phones.
The report said recent Pixel flagships have been disappointing for gamers, especially emulator users. It said the Pixel 10's move to Imagination's PowerVR series did not produce meaningful gaming performance gains and led to several early driver issues and glitches. The Pixel 11's Tensor G6 uses the CXTP series, which the report said did not appear outright worse for gaming but also did not improve the situation for Android games.
In the report, Android Authority said games such as Genshin Impact suffer from significant jank and microstutters that did not affect the Pixel 10 series. The author traced the problem to ANGLE becoming the default OpenGL ES implementation on the Pixel 11 series as of the September 2026 update. The report said users can confirm this by enabling Android's 'show ANGLE toast' in Developer Settings or by checking game and emulator logs. It cited Dolphin Emulator, which displays a message beginning 'ANGLE (Imagination Technologies, Vulkan 1.4.317 (PowerVR C-Series CXTP-48-1536 MC1...' when a game is launched using OpenGL ES.
According to the report, the key terms in that message are ANGLE and Vulkan, even though Dolphin and most other emulators use OpenGL ES as their default graphics renderer. The report said the Pixel 11 Pro XL still uses the OpenGL ES API, but ANGLE provides the implementation and translates those calls to Vulkan. ANGLE is a compatibility layer that implements OpenGL ES on top of Vulkan, allowing an OpenGL ES game to continue making OpenGL calls while ANGLE translates them into Vulkan commands for the underlying GPU driver. The report added that even a game engine that primarily uses Vulkan, such as Call of Duty Mobile, can still involve ANGLE for parts of the rendering pipeline that use OpenGL ES, so a game does not have to be entirely OpenGL ES-based for ANGLE to be involved.
The report said ANGLE is intended to improve compatibility and stability and to standardize implementation across Android devices. Google has been moving Android toward a Vulkan-centered graphics stack for several years, with ANGLE positioned as the OpenGL ES-to-Vulkan translation layer on newer devices. As of 2025, Vulkan is the official graphics API for Android, and Google has said it expects many more devices to support ANGLE as the GL system driver. The report said the recent change only affects the Pixel 11 series. OpenGL remains the default render path on the Pixel 10 Pro XL that was updated to Android 17 and the September 2026 patch.
On the Pixel 11 Pro XL, the report said ANGLE was used throughout the Android rendering pipeline. Even games that predominantly use Vulkan, such as Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt Legends, showed the 'Using ANGLE' toast when the developer setting was enabled. The report also saw it when booting virtually every Android app, but only on the Pixel 11 Pro XL and not the Pixel 10 Pro XL. It listed Asphalt Legends, Call of Duty Mobile, Genshin Impact, and Dolphin Emulator as apps that used ANGLE on the Pixel 11 Pro XL but not on the Pixel 10 Pro XL.
The report said that because the change is major and has coincided with performance complaints online, it raises the question of whether ANGLE improves or hinders performance. It said ANGLE can be disabled and the device can default back to the native rendering path via Developer Settings, then ANGLE Preferences. The report tested several Android games and emulators with ANGLE enabled and disabled, referring to the non-ANGLE option as Native, although that path can use either OpenGL ES or Vulkan depending on the application.
In the tests, the report said Genshin Impact showed significant microstutter with ANGLE, likely due to overhead and re-caching when new assets load. It said performance was worse with ANGLE than with the native OpenGL pipeline, with lower average and worst-case frame rates. Neither path could lock to 60 fps in open environments, the report said, but the jank made the now-default ANGLE rendering far worse.
